LATE START
THE AUSTRALIAN=SURREY MATCH VISITORS OPEN FAIRLY WELL AT OVAL. FOUR WICKETS DOWN FOR 204. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. (Recd This Day, 9.55 a.m.) LONDON, August 11. Play in the match between Surrey and Australia commenced at 2.15 p.m. The Oval wicket is notorious for bad behaviour when sunshine follows rain. Consequently it was not surprising that Holmes (the Surrey captain) sent Australia in to bat. The wicket, however, played well. Fingleton when 9, reached a long-delayed thousand runs on the tour. The opening batsmen scored 64 before Fingleton was out. Hassett soon followed. Then McCabe and Barnes became associated in a partnership realising 93 runs. Both batted attractively. The bowling appeared to be mastered, when Barnes called for a short single, to which McCabe responded and was run out. With a thunderstorm brewing, bad light stopped play for the day at 5.55 p.m. Scores: — AUSTRALIA. First Innings) Brown, lbw, b Squires 39 Fingleton, c Gover, b Watts 27 McCabe, run out 67 Hassett, lbw, b Gregory 11 Barnes, not out 47 Waite, not out 4 Extras 9 Total for four wickets 204
