"The visit of two persons to the pavilion'of the New Zealand Government at the Glasgow Exhibition within the last fortnight,” said the “Daily Herald,” London, recently, “has furnished interesting links with the early days of. a country which, less than a century ago, became a British possession. One of those who passed through the pavilion a few days ago was Major Valentine Baker, who was third mate on the ship Dunedin when in 1882 it brought the first consignment of New Zealand lamb and mutton to Britain. The cargo on the Dunedin consisted of 8000 carcases of lamb and mutton. New Zealand is now the largest exporting country of these commodities, the consignments it ships to the United Kingdom annually amounting to 11,000,000 carcases. The other visitor who recalled the early growth of the Dominion was a grandniece of Hobson, the first Governor of New Zealand.”
