WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
A BIRTHDAY GATHERING The Kaituna-Fernridge Women’s Institute held its fifth birthday in the Kaituna hall on Friday last. There was a large attendance of members, and visitors from various Institutes — Upper Plain,' Carterton, Parkvale, Kopuaranga, Solway-Manaia, Mt Bruce Kahutara, Martinborough and the Towns’-Women’s Guild. Mrs Keir (vice-president) presented Miss L. Shaw (president) with a shoulder spray. A member of each Institute was similarly honoured. • A very pleasant afternoon was spent and items were given by the following: —Miss R. McKay, vocal solos; a humorous play by the members of the Kahutara Women’s Institute entitled "Ten Green Bottles,” and a very humorous play by members of the Kaituna Women’s Institute, “The Bloaters” Mrs L. Taylforth being the producer. -Three competitions were also held, the winners being Mrs Beecroft,/Miss Chisholm and Miss R. McKay, respectively. | Afternoon tea was served by. the members of the Institute, and a beautifuL birthday cake given by Mr Wallis, and handsomely decorated by , Mrs J. Shaw, was cut' by Mrs Keir. ; The point prizes for the year were won as follow: —Seniors: Mrs Stempa, 1; Mrs R. Talyforth, 2. Juniors: Miss L. Shaw, 1; Miss L. Pain, 2. Flowers: Mesdames Pike and Shaw.
The potato competition was won by Mrs J. Stempa. An enjoyable function was brought to a close with the 'singing of the Institute song, and the National Anthem. MEETING AT KAHUTARA At the August meeting of the Kahutara Women’s Institute the opportunity was taken to go over to the local school and plant an ornamental tree in commemoration of Arbor Day. This is the fourth occasion on which the Institute . ladies have presented a shrub to the Kahutara school. Barbara Corlet, on behalf of the pupils, and to show their appreciation, presented Mrs McKenna, the Institute president, with a shoulder spray. A most interesting report on the Dominion conference held recently at Wellington was given by the Institute’s delegate, Mrs Rendle, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks by all present. After afternoon tea, which was served by the hostesses Mesdames Chisholm and Fenwick, and Misses O. Harvey and D. Chisholm, Miss Wolters of Carterton gave members a most interesting demonstration in the art of wreath making, and was presented with a shoulder spray in appreciation. The competition for apricot jam was won by Mrs Rendle, with Mrs Humphries second, and Mrs Rogers third. The best flower competition was won by Mrs Graham with an iris, Mrs Welsh being second with a polyanthus, and Mrs Russell third with an anemone. In the junior competition for cocoanut ice, Miss L. Hood was first, Miss B. Warrington second, and Miss N. Corlett third. Mrs Humphries, as Institute librarian, reported that there had been a further purchase of about 130 books for the library shelves. It was decided that a gift be sent to Mrs W. George, who is leaving the district, and who has been a most enthusiastic worker for the cause of the Institute.
