LITTLE THEATRE SOCIETY
PROPOSALS BY COMMITTEE. SUGGESTED LINE OF ACTIVITIES. The provisional committee set up by a meeting last week of those interested in the formation of a Little Theatre Society in Masterton has made the following recommendations and suggestions for consideration at a further meeting to be held tomorrow afternoon: — x . The committee is definitely of opinion that the work of other societies will in no way be hindered or interfered with by the operations of the proposed society. It is hoped on the contrary that the work of the existing
groups will be stimulated and fostered. The society will have to draw on these groups for its players to a very large extent but the time of each individual player will not be required to such an extent as to infere with his or her activities in these groups. The committee is strongly of opinion that the programme of the society should not embrace the reading of plays. The programme for the remainder of this year should be: The presentation of a three-act play for three nights from September 14 to September 16, Mr McCallum to be the producer; the presentation of three oneact plays on Monday, October 31, each of these plays to be produced by a different producer and by a different cast. Applications for the right to produce should be made through the provisional secretary and allocations should be made by a committee to be set up.
Pending the incorporation of the society with a formal constitution, which the committee recommends should be deferred until February next, it is suggested that a committee of five members and a secretary-treasurer should carry on meantime and that intending members should pay an entrance fee of 2s 6d which would entitle them to purchase seats at a lower price than is charged to the general public and to preferential booking. Once the society is established it is suggested that the following should form a basis for consideration by the society as the annual programme to be adopted: (a) Three or four major productions (full length three-act plays running for two or three nights); (b) socials held at intervals of a month or six weeks at which three one-act plays will be presented with different casts and under different producers. After the plays light supper and possibly dancing till midnight. It is anticipated that it will be necessary to charge Is per member and 2s to non-members for the purpose of defraying the cost of supper and the hire of rooms. By February, 1939, it is held, members and intending members should have sufficient idea of the scope of the society’s activities to be able to decide if it is desirable to incorporate the society, fix the formal constitution, and decide on the adoption of an annual programme.
