CROSSING FATALITY
WOMAN KILLED AT HOROPITO MAN AND GIRL INJURED (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 8. As a result of a collision between a train and a motor-car, a married woman was killed and two persons were injured at Horopito, eight miles from Ohakune, about 3 p.m. on Saturday. The car was carried about 90 yards in front of the train. The victims were:— Killed. Mrs Edith Martha Noffke, aged 50, Horopito. Injured. Mr Albert Edward Bonner, aged 29, Horopito, shock and abrasions; Miss Lillian Noffke, aged 17, daughter of Mrs Noffke, severe concussion. The car, which was being driven by Mr Bonner, was travelling along a side road which branches off the Oha-kune-National Park main highway about 100 yards on the southern side of the Horopito railway station. It collided with the train at a level crossing, the left-hand side of the vehicle receiving the full force of the impact. Mr Bonner was thrown clear, but Mrs Noffke and her daughter were still in the car, which was carried on the front of the engine, when the train was stopped. Miss Noffke and Mr Bonner were taken to the Raetihi Hospital, but the latter was later able to return to his home. The condition of Miss Noffke was reported to be improving.
