BRITAIN & EGYPT
DEFENCE OF THE SUEZ CANAL. AGREEMENT AS TO COST OF ACCOMMODATION. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, August 4. An official communique regarding the Egyptian and British talks states that:—‘Conversations have taken place With Mahmoud Pasha (Premier of Egypt) regarding certain financial provisions of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of Alliance of 1936. Mahmoud Pasha represented that the cost to Egypt of providing the accommodation required under the provisions of the treaty concerned turned out to be greatly in excess of the estimate formed at the time of the signature of the treaty. An agreement was initialled today of which the principal effect will be that Britain agrees to raise its contribution to one-half of the cost of the construction of accommodation for land and air forces, water and electric supplies, amenities and a convalescent camp, and dwellings for civilian personnel for the British forces.”
The agreement was initialled by Viscount Halifax (Foreign Minister) and Mahmoud Pasha.
