GREYTOWN

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown District High School Committee was held last evening. There were present Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman), Mrs Knell (secretary), Messrs F. Dennes, E. Graham, J. Herod, H. Bassett, W. G. K. Wiggins. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J. Morison and H. C. Trotman. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr H. G. Carter in his recent bereavement. The headmaster reported that the roll was: Secondary 49, primary 299. Owing to the measles the attendance for July had been very poor, but it was now improving. Authority was received from the Education Board to have a hot point installed in the secondary department for a wireless set.

The grounds committee reported that the following works would be carried out: (1) The relaying of the playing area in front of the new class rooms; (2) planting trees on the west side of the football field; (3) the grading of the pathway on the north side of the main school. The secretary was instructed to apply to the Education Board for extra chairs for the High School. Mr Bassett reported that a parent of a child from Matarawa had been notified by the board that when his child reached the age of ten payment would have to be made for her transport to the Greytown School. This particular child lived within one mile of the now closed Matarawa school, and at the same time is 21 miles from the Dalefield School. It was felt that this was a breach of faith, as the Matarawa residents agreed to the closing of their school and free transport to Greytown. The chairman agreed to consult Mr A. Donald on this matter. Mr Wiggins was deputed to interview the Wairarapa Electric Power Board regarding the cost of heating the new class rooms. This was proving more costly than that in the main sphool. SWINE HUSBANDRY. There * was a good attendance of farmers at the Fire Brigade Hall last night, when a lecture and demonstration was given on swine husbandry. DEATH OF MR P. ROBAND. The death occurred at Greytown on Tuesday of Mr Peter Roband at the age of 87 years. Mr Roband had been a resident of the South Wairarapa for many years. He is surived by his wife and a grown-up family.
