A large number of friends of Mr Stan Hall gathered in the Masonic Hall on Saturday night in connection with his 21st birthday. After supper Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., proposed the toast of the guest of honour. Mr Roberts congratulated Mr Hall on reaching his majority, and expressed the opinion that he was at the best stage of his life. Mr Roberts concluded by wishing him all happiness and prosperity. The toast of Mr Stan Hall’s parents, Mr and Mrs W. H. Hall, was proposed by Mr J. Fisher. Mr A. E. Hall proposed the toast of Mrs Wenden, grandmother of the guest of honour, and this was responded to by Mr Ray Hall, Clareville. The large birthday cake, which was made by Mrs W. H. Hall and decorated by Mr Ci- Holland, was then cut and 'distributed among those present. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Brickell (Battersea), and partner. The music for the dancing was supplied by Messrs Spooner, C. Kiddie and J. H. Chapman, while extras were played by Miss June Hall. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At the monthly meeting of the school committee the Education Department forwarded, as requested, quotations for the installation of radio in the school, their price being £42 15s. The specifications had been handed to local dealers with a request for a quote, and only one tender was received up till Monday night, that of Mr C. K. Goodin. This tender was of £72 10s, with an alternative ,tender of £52 10s, including installation charges. The Education Department quote was without installation. It was decided to ask Mr Goodin to instal the lower priced set temporarily to allow the committee to judge its merits, and this was agreed to by Mr Goodin. For a 5-valve set with an extra speaker for the secondary department, the Department’s quote was just over £ll. It was left to the chairman and secretary to obtain local quotations for this radio. The acting-headmaster submitted a report, in which he stated that the average attendance at the school during the past week was 74 per cent. Although there were only ten cases of measles, there was a large number of cases of colds and influenza, and this accounted for the poor attendance. Covering was required for the floor of the staff room of the old school. The chairman and treasurer were authorised to procure the same. MINIATURE RIFLES.
