POPE DEFIED

MUSSOLINI ON RACIAL DOCTRINES PROGRAMME TO BE CARRIED OUT ROME, July 31. Addressing a gathering of the Young Fascists today, Signor Mussolini replied to the Pope’s condemnation of racial and nationalistic doctrines. He declared that the Government intended to carry out its racial programme. The Pope’s statement that Fascism was imitating someone or something was simply absurd. “Why should Italy feel the necessity for disgracefully imitating Germany?” the Pope was reported to have stated. “Too many people forget that human beings are of one universal race. Catholicism means universality, but not of doctrines of race and nationalism.”
