VIOLIN RECITAL

ALAN LOVEDAY DELIGHTS AUDIENCE Under the auspices of the British Music Society, a violin recital was held in St Matthew’s School Hall on Saturday night when Alan Loveday, the New Zealand boy genius, held a large audience spellbound with his beautiful music. This delightful performer, wholly unconscious of his charm, played with delicate perfection a variety of difficult solos. The audience, only with the greatest reluctance left the hall, after a number of encores had been given most ungrudgingly. The programme was divided into four groups, “Rondo” (Mozart-Kreis-ler), was an appropriate opening number. “Mazurka de Concert” (Musin) completed the first group. Those who remembered the Belgium violinist’s visit to New Zealand appreciated Alan Loveday’s versatility in this number. Chopin’s “Nocturne” was given with perfection of tone, remarkable for one so young. His performance reflected great credit on his teaching.

“Tambourin Chinois” (Kreisler) a brilliant and exacting number was ably interpreted.“Liebesfreud” (Kreisler) was almost faultless, the tonality and double stoppings being remarkable. In the final group, “The Dance of the Goblins” (Bazzini) was a revelation, the spiccato and left hand pizzicato being wonderfully well done, and performed with finish that a mature artist might well envy.

Finally “Souvenir” (Drdla) was played in a delightfully dainty manner. Several exquisite encores were played —“Le Canari”-(Poliakin), “Flight of the Bumble Bee,” (Rimsky-Korsakov), Drigo’s “Valse Bluette,” and a medley of jigs and hornpipes, etc. Mr Miller-Hope carried out the duties of accompanist in a most able manner. • Members of jfhe British Music Society contributed supplementary items, which were most enjoyable. Mrs Loveday, the president (Mrs T. Jordan), and committee were entertained at supper by the College staff.
