DEBATE ON FINANCIAL STATEMENT
TAXATION AND THE COUNTRY QUOTA
PRESENTATION OF DEFENCE REPORT
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Discussion on the Financial Statement was continued in the House of Representatives yesterday. With an hour’s speaking time allowed each member, progress is naturally slow, and the present indications are that the debate will extend into next week. Six more speeches were made yesterday, bringing the total contributions to the debate up to 20. Of this number, 13 speeches have been made by Gov? ernment members, five by Opposition members, and two by Independents. The debate was resumed by Mr C. L. Hunter (Government, Manawatu), whose remarks had been interrupted by the adjournment the previous evening. He outlined the achievements of the Government since it assumed office. The only Opposition speaker was Mr K. J. Holyoake (Motueka), \ who discussed the New Zealand tobac-co-growing industry. He claimed that there was no industry in the Dominion that offered better scope for expansion in a small area than tobacco growing. The industry, added Mr Holyoake, needed not only sympathy but sympathetic action from the Government. Information concerning the Government’s attitude to the country quota in the event of its return at the next general election was sought by Mr C. A. Wilkinson (Independent, Egmont). He also criticised the rise in taxation, and said that not 10 per cent of the farmers in Taranaki would support the Government when it faced-the electors this year. The annual report on the military forces of the Dominion by the Chief / of the General Staff, Major-General J. E. Duigan, was presented yesterday. He said a good deal had been accomplished during the year to improve the defence system, and that other important measures were now under consideration. The House adjourned at 10.30 p.m. until today.
