Mr H. J. Fairchild, of Renall Street, is at present a patient in Glenwood Private Hospital. The death occurred at Pahiatua yesterday of Mrs S. A. Pearcey, relict of the late Mr Albert Pearcey, at the age of 70 years. A London cable message states that the King received Sir Harry Luke on the occasion of his appointment as Governor of Fiji. Mr J. H. Irving, Wellington district vice-president of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, is visiting Wellington to attend the annual conference of the association. The Hon Henrietta Loder and the Hon Christopher Loder (children of the Governor of New South Wales and Lady Wakehurst) and Mr J. Leach are staying at Government House, Wellington. At Monday night’s meeting of the Dannevirke Borough Council, the resignation of Mr G. J. Scott, manager of the municipal gas department for the past 13 years, was received. The resignation will take effect from September 20. A call to the Rev E. J. Orange, St Giles’s Presbyterian Church, Kilbirnie, Wellington, from the Presbytery of South Auckland, was sustained by the Presbytery of Wellington at its special meeting in Wellington last night. The moderator, Rev P. J. Wainwright, presided. At the conclusion of the meeting, members of the presbytery entertained Mr Orange to tea. The death occurred at Dunedin yesterday afternoon, at the age of 62 years, of Mr George Lyon Cuthbertson, surveyor and engineer to the Waitaki County Council, Oamaru, since 1915, says an Oamaru Press Association message. He was a well known golfer and had attended the New Zealand championships. He was six times holder of the North Otago championship, and also won the Invercargill and Southland championships.
