GREYTOWN
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. CARING FOR SOLDIERS’ GRAVES (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr A. W. Horton, presided at the monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council, held last night. Others present were: Councillors H. J. Nightingale, F. W. Wood, H. J. Farley, G. Eagar, E. Balfour and A. Stuart. The Masterton County Council advised that the Greytown council’s allocation of heavy traffic fees for the year was £199 12s 6d, as compared with £lB6 18s lOd last year. It was decided to open a public subscription list for the relief of Spanish war refugee children. The Citizens’ Committee wrote stating that the business people had subscfibed £5 6s towards the cost of the coloured lights erected in the streets and asked if the council would make up the balance owing to the Power Board of £3 19s Id. The request was granted. A letter was received from the Greytown branch of the Wairarapa R.S.A. stating that steps were being taken to have headstones placed on all the returned soldiers’ graves. It was also intended to try to have all the plots properly laid out and cared for. The committee would appreciate any help the council might be able to give in having the work carried out. The matter was referred to the Cemetery Committee. An application from R. D. Vance for a taxi licence was granted. Brief discussions on correspondence from the Wellington Provincial Centennial Committee were taken in committee. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB. The Greytown Branch of the Young Farmers’ Club held a meeting in the Fire Brigade Hall last night. The speaker was Mr N. Lamont, of the Department of Agriculture and his subject was “Common Pests of the Farmers.” Lantern slides were used to illustrate the lecture. At the conclusion Mr Lamont was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. TABLE TENNIS. The table tennis Button winners for the week at the Greytown Methodist
Club were Messrs A. Webster and G. Knight. PERSONAL. His many Wairarapa friends will regret to hear that Mr G. Carter is at present critically ill in the Wellington Hospital. Mr Carter formerly resided at Ahikouka for some years. Mr W. A. Tate, of Kuratawhiti Street, is at present attending the annual conference of the N.Z. Fruit Growers Federation which is being held at Palmerston North.
