DEBATE ON THURSDAY

VISITING NEGRO STUDENTS. Negro spirituals and negro athletic achievements are known the world over, but few people in New Zealand are aware of the intellectual capabilities of the negro race. The.negro debaters from Le Moyne College, U.S.A., who are at present visiting the Dominion in the course of. their world tour, are striking examples of the intellectual progress of the negro race during.the last 70 years. These two brilliant young negro graduates combine the soft and eloquent voice of their race with the wit and humour of the American. They are keen debaters, they are also clever entertainers. A combined Anglo-Scottish team which toured the United States during the last American autumn ranked the Le Moyne team to which New Zealand is at present host, as the best combination they had encountered. The subject for Thursday evening’s debate at the Opera House is: “That World Peace is Undesirable as well as Impossible.” The visitors are taking the affirmative and it will be interesting to hear the arguments they adduce in support of a proposition which, at first sight, appears untenable. Masterton is to be represented by Messrs John H. Kemnitz and John Dwyer, both experienced debaters, and a spirited contest should result. In addition to the main debate, a short musical programme and" a series of humorous impromptu speeches is being arranged. The box plan is now open at Perry’s where reserves may be made free of charge.
