ART UNION PROCEEDS
POLICY OF GOVERNMENT. MARTINBOROUGH APPLICATION. “In view of the present policy of deviating the whole of the profits of the Art Unions to the relief of distress throughout the Dominion, I regret it is not possible to make grants for the construction of swimming baths and the like,” stated a letter received at last night’s meeting of the Martinborough Borough from the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon W. A. Parry, in reply to a request by the council for a substantial contribution from Art Union funds towards the cost of constructing public swimming baths in Martinborough.
“The only way in which I could assist in this matter,” Mr Parry added, “would be by granting permission for a local art union. If the Baths Committee is prepared to submit an application with ,a small amount of alluvial gold, say, not exceeding £25 as prizes, I would be pleased to have the necessary forms forwarded to enable a formal request to be submitted.” The Mayor, Mr C. W. Skill, said it did not look as though the council could do anything. He suggested that the matter be referred to the Home and School Association, which was a live body and might be prepared to do something about an art union. The Mayor’s suggestion was adopted.
