Mr M. Iggulden. of Hamilton, who has been on a holiday visit to Masterton, returned home today. Mr J. Mulvey, formerly Postmaster at Masterton, and Mrs Mulvey, are at present on a visit to Masterton. Sir Charles and Lady Norwood, Wellington, who have been visiting their daughter at Melbourne, returned by the Wanganella yesterday. Mr E. Casey will be acting-General Manager of New Zealand Railways during the absence of the General Manager, Mr G. H. Maqkley, in Australia. 1

Mr R. P. Fish, who has for the past 11 years been a member of the city engineer’s staff, Wellington, has been appointed assistant city engineer at Invercargill, in succession to Mr P. J. Alley, who has been appointed engineer to the Taumarunui Borough Council.

The death occurred in the New Plymouth Hospital yesterday after a long illness of Mr David Johnston, a prominent Rugby player who toured Australia as an AU Black in 1925. He represented Taranaki for the 10 years 1922-32 and the North Island on one occasion. He was captain of the Okaiawa team and, on retirement from active football, took part in the administration of the game. Miss Nora Ractliffe, of Masterton, who has been overseas for the past 12 months, is at present attending a world Girl Guide conference in Switzerland, as one of New Zealand's two delegates. During her visit to England, Miss Ractliffe took every opportunity to further her knowledge of Guiding, and attended refresher courses at Foxlease and Waddow. She is expected to re-, turn to New Zealand about September. The death occurred at Napier yesterday of Mr Robert Sands, one of the pioneer settlers of Hawke’s Bay. Mr Sands arrived at Napier in the ship Rekia more than 60 years ago. After living in both the North and South Islands for some years he went to New South Wales and engaged in silver mining at Broken Hill for about six years. He returned to Hastings more than 30 years ago and engaged in farming until ten years ago, when he retired to Napier. He was a prominent member of the Napier Bowling Club. He leaves four brothers, Messrs Thomas and William Sands (Hastings), Frederick Sands (Hamilton) and George Sands (Wellington), and two sisters, Mrs Siddle (Takapau) and Mrs Scott (Hastings). The death occurred at Taita recently of Mr A. R. Barnes, for many years a director of the Wellington Dairy Farmers’ Co-operative Association and of the Hutt Valley Loan and Deposit Company. Born at Belper, Derbyshire, England, in 1883, he arrived in New Zealand in 1901, until retiring to take up farming, was in business as a paint and wallpaper merchant. In his earlier days Mr Barnes was a keen bowler, being a foundation member or tne Hataitai club, and later a member of the Wellington club. Keenly interested in music, he was a former member of the Wellington Harmonic Society and of the Wellington Choral Union. He was also a member of Renown Masonic Lodge. He leaves a widow, a sonr, and a daughter.
