MARTINBOROUGH
LABOUR PARTY BALL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The second annual ball of the local branch of the Labour Party was held in the Town Hall on Friday night. There was a good attendance. The hall was tastefully decorated in blending shades of pink, and Udy’s Orchestra supplied the music. Vocal items were rendered by Mrs Oliver, of Masterton, and the Te Maari brothers, which items were much appreciated. A waltzing competition was won by Mrs Oliver and partner, and a statue waltz by Mr Harry Kelly and Mrs Kaio. Mr Maha and Mrs Remi won the Monte Carlo. Extras were played by Mrs Riddell and the Te Maari brothers. Supper was served. On behalf of the committee organising the ball, Mrs V. Webb thanked those present for attending and making the function such an outstanding success. Mr Ron Shaw, chairman of the Wairarapa Association, also returned thanks. THIRD GRADE FOOTBALL. The Martinborough thirds met and defeated Red Star 111 on the local ground by 8 to 3. Up to half time there was no score. Seven minutes after resuming play Harley crossed the Red Star line to score. The kick failed. Martinborough 3 Red Star 0. Through smart following up from an unsuccessful kick at goal, Ronalds secured the ball and scored, J. Flynn converting. Martinborough 8 Red Star 0. From a free kick Red Star opened their score. The Red Star forwards though slightly heavier than Martinborough secured the ball from the majority of the scrums. Mr Bert McKenzie was referee.
PERSONAL. A party given by Mr and Mrs Hill at their home in Hinakura on Saturday to celebrate the 18th birthday of their daughter, Verina, was a very jolly function. Dancing, novel games and competitions helped to pass a very pleasant evening. Mr and Mrs F. Bird, of Hinakura, are inmates of Tiri Hospital. Miss Jean McLeod, who is on the staff of the Palmerston North/ Hospital, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs N. McLeod, Hinakura. Miss M. Quinn spent the weekend with her parents at Lower Hutt. Mr Eric McAlpine was discharged from Tiri Hospital last Friday. Misses Eveline Beale and Chris Linklater and Mr Goslin, of Wellington, were the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Brimble for the weekend. Mr E. Fuller and Mr N. Lundon have been the guests of Mrs Joslin, Wanganui, during the weekend. Mrs Winchcombe was a visitor to Wanganui for the weekend. A GIFT AFTERNOON. The Tablelands ladies gave a gift afternoon on Saturday in the Parish Hall for Miss Noeline Holmes in honour of her approaching marriage. The guests numbering about fifty were received by Mesdames Arcus, Sharp and Coleman. Miss Betty Grant gave two piano solos, Miss McKenzie and Mrs T. Boyd sang. These items were much appreciated. Miss C. Martin won the competition.
Afternoon tea was served after which Miss Holmes assisted by Miss G. Arcus opened the parcels, which contained many handsome and useful Miss Holmes thanked everyone present, and Jill Arcus then presented her with a small posy and musical honours were accorded. The singing of Auld Lang Syne ended a pleasant afternoon.
