The weather was fine for most of the day but the heavy rain on Saturday night made the course very heavy. In the singles Waiwetu won 14 games, Greytown 4, and 4 were halved. In the four ball game Waiwetu won 7, Greytown 1, 3 games all square. Mr Harvey, the president, expressed the pleasure it gave him to once more welcome the Greytown golfers. The exchange of visits between these two clubs had been continued for ten years. HOCKEY NOTES

WAIRARAPA v. AKITIO On Saturday a representative team from the Wairarapa Ladies’ Hockey Association journeyed to Pongaroa to play the annual match with the Akitio Association’s team. The team was not at full strength owing to the illness of some of' those originally chosen, but the emergencies who filled the gaps played very well indeed, and by no means disgraced. themselves. The - trip out, as is always the case, was a very trying one on the girls, owing to the number of bends and hills, and .this showed its effect.until the second half. Although Akitio won 3-2, a draw would have been a better indication of play. In the first half Wairaraap played up hill, against the sun and wind, as well as into the worse goal. At halftime the wind veered' round, and the sun disappeared. All the goals (on both sides) were scored when the tealn was playing downhill. During the first half Akitio were superior, chiefly because of good work by their halves and centre forward and inside right. In the first half of the second spell matters were even, and then Wairarapa took complete charge. Only a very

sticky goal mouth prevented their score from going beyond two. For the last quarter hour Akitio hardly advanced beyond the half-way line, the Wairarapa backs and halves checking any possible attack, and returning the play their forwards, who with brilliant flashes of combination, peppered the home circle. Both Wairarapa’s goals were good, one being from a strong hit in field by L. Cadwallader, and the other from a similar shot, following a rebound, by the centre-forward, E. Hanley. The game ended with Wairarapa decidedly on top. A marked feature of the game was the splendid spirit in which it was played. Both teams and referees, as well as the crowd enjoyed themselves. Akitio supporters very sportingly cheered for Wairarapa as lustily as for their own team. The visitors were entertained in the hospitable manner characteristic of the Akitio body, to lunch and afternoon ,tea.

The ground was the same as that on which the English ladies will play on July 12, and should further wet weather be experienced, the overseas team may find difficulty in pulling themselves out as quickly as they are accustomed to. Although trie Akitio team is not the .strongest -of combinations, it is famed for upsetting leading teams at tournaments. In view of the fact that the English ladies played a hard game with Eastern Districts yesterday, and have to play the first Test and Wellington in the coming week, this strenuous period may reflect itself in their performance against Akitio. Fitness will prove a deciding factor, although the Akitio stickwork does not favour a short passing game.

> The Greytown juniors recorded a good win on Saturday against Wesley. This is particularly encouraging, especially when every boy played well. A number of the team were playing out of their usual position. It will not be long before every boy will have played in at least three positions; and by that time he should possess not only a fair understanding of the game as a whole, but also a realisation of what position he fits into best. The boys would do well to note that selection from now on will be based mainly on the question as to who have paid their subscriptions, and an appeal is therefore made to everybody to pay his subscription as soon as possible. The club has lost the services of Mr A. Harp as secretary, and members are asked to note that Mr L. Strange has

taken this position. Senior members would assist considerably by paying their subscriptions and levies immediately. Members of both clubs (ladies’ and men’s) should also note that as yet no word has been received regarding extension of closing time for the Wairarapa Art Union.
