PIRINOA

INTER-CLUB GOLF. (“Times-Age” Special.) The inter-club match between the Pirinoa and Martinborough teams was played on the Pirinoa links on Saturday, and resulted in a win for Martinborough by 7| games to SJ. The weather was fine and the greens and fairways in good order. Only singles were played, and some close games were witnessed, especially in the case of -the two top men, who both produced par golf. The local player won at the last hole. In some of the lower matches excellent golf was also play-ed.--Moore, of Martinborough, registered a 79, which, considering the conditions, was a brilliant round. The local course is by no means an easy one and an 84 is regarded as good. The following were the results (Pirinoa players first mentioned in each case): —B. McMaster beat H. Harvey; D. Tikao lost to S. Martin; G. Munro lost to J. Pike; D. Jones lost to S. Richards; M. McLeod beat M. Perry; J. Riwai beat L. Frank; R. McDougall lost to C. Sievers; T. Hume beat F. Rankine; M. Herangi lost to C. Moore; J. Carter and G. McLeod, all square; K. Waiwera bfi’at D. Matheson; S. Thomas lost to A. Pike; R. Lawrence lost to H. Haycock. Totals: Martinborough 7J, Pirinoa SJ. The inter-club match between the local club and Featherston will be played here at the weekend. SCHOOL SPORTS. The home and home football and basketball, matches between the local school and Kahutara are being played today. NATIONAL PARTY. The meeting of the local branch of the National Party which was to have been held last Monday has been postponed to a later date owing to unforeseen circumstances. , A POPULAR BALL. Lovers of dancing are reminded of the Bachelors and Spinters’ Ball which is to be held on July 6. Preparations are well forward and patrons are promised a most enjoyable evening. OBITUARY. The death occurred recently in the Wellington Hospital of Mr Toby Winstanley, a well-known former resident of this district. He had been in failing health for the past two months, and his death was not unexpected. He was 52 years of age. The interment took place at Karori. BROUGH CUP SHOOT. There was a large muster of shooters at the Lake Ferry on Saturday when the final for the Brough Cup was fired. The winner was the veteran, R. Buick, with G. Sutherland second. FIRST LAMBS OF SEASON. The first lambs of the season have made their appearance in this district on the property of Mr F. Brough, Lake Ferry. PERSONAL. Messrs C. and D. Didsbury, Wellington, were visitors for the weekend. Messrs A. D. Webster and S. Enoka, Otaki, who were in the district for a few days’ shooting, have returned home.
