In the third round of the women’s singles the eclipse of Mrs WillsMoody seemed imminent as four thousand spectators watched Miss Heine Miller (South Africa) sensationally pile up a s—l lead, but suddenly she seemed magnetised by the American’s backhand, and asked Mrs Wills-Moody to call the tune. Mrs Wills-Moody took five games on end, after which the issue was never in doubt. The gallery at the centre court gave Austin an unusually warm welcome.
