MR SEMPLE’S VISIT
WHY MAYOR WAS NOT IN THE CHAIR. STATEMENT BY MR. .JORDAN. “There has been some criticism because the Mayor was not in the chair at the public meeting addressed in Masterton recently by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon R. Semple,” observed the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, at last night's meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. “While I do not take much notice of public opinion,” he added, “I would not like it to go out that I was discourteous to a Minister of the Crown. On June 8, the Minister sent me a telegram stating that he would be visiting Masterton and would be addressing a public meeting. I did not gather whether he wanted me to take the chair or not, so I got in touch with the member for the district (Mr J. Robertson) and offered to take the chair. He promised to let me know. * That is the last I heard of it. That is all I have to say about it.” Councillor W. Kemp: “But you had a friendly conference with the Minister the next day?” Mr Jordan: “Exactly. I never quarrel with Ministers. I have told them off at times, but quite good-naturedly and I will probably do so again. The member for the district promised to let me know, but I never heard any more about it.” . .
