WELLINGTON BURGLARY
JEWELLER’S SHOP BROKEN INTO. MONEY AND GOODS STOLEN. (Ey Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Thieves broke into the premises of J. B. Lauchlan Ltd., watchmakers and jewellers. Woodward Street, Wellington, yesterday morning and escaped with £9 in money and a number of valuable watches and rings. This is the seventh burglary during the past two years in the two shops conducted in Wellington by Mr L-’iic.li-lan, the other shop being in Manners Street. It is also the third attempt on the Woodward Street shop within the past two months. The thieves forced an entry into the shop through a window at the top of a fire-escape in an alley running alongside the shop. A jemmy or similar instrument was used to force open the door of the office of Cash Orders Ltd. on the first floor, and the upstair quarters of Mr Lauchlan’s office were ransacked. It was from here that the money was taken. The thieves next forced open the door leading into the shop itself; and among the articles removed were a number of watches, 16 valuable wedding rings, and a number of solid gold cigarette cases. Some jewellery that was being repaired was also stolen. The arrival at the premises at a much earlier hour than usual of an employee apparently disturbed the thieves, as some rings were left on the shop counter. The matter has been placed in the hands of the police.
