RISING RATES
SUBSTANTIAL INCREASES IN DUNEDIN. NEEDED TO MEET HIGHER COSTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association). DUNEDIN, This Day. The City Council last'evening adopt-* ed proposals involving the levying of a general rate of 2s 5d and an hospital rate of Bd, being an increase of 4d and Id respectively on last year’s levies. A statement by the Finance Committee show the gross estimated revenue as £220,309 and expenditure £265,430. A minute by the Finance chairman, Mr W. B. Taverner, stated that with a relatively small revenue increase, expenditure had advanced year by year till today it was beyond the council’s ordinary resources. The expenditure had been mainly caused by substantial increases in the wages of the working staff and overhead charges for many works undertaken to absorb labour. Financing had been accomplished by diversion from renewal funds, which since 1935 had fallen by £118,479.
