COUNTY AFFAIRS
MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL. GENERAL RATE STRUCK. The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was. held on Saturday. There were present Councillors E. W. Cheetham (chairman), R. Judd, D. Bennett, A. Gray, and C. Welch. Leave of was granted to Councillor A. Forsberg. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £1903 14s 9d. Accounts totalling £578 2s 8d were passed. In accordance with notice already given a general rate of 1 5-8 d in the £ on the capital value of the whole county was struck and it was decided to allow a discount at the rate of five per cent on the general rate paid on or before August 13. Mr R. Breach wrote requesting that steps be taken to remedy unbridged creeks on Putara Road. The clerk was directed to reply that this mat'cr could riot be considered at present, as the Public Works and county estimates for rating purposes had already been fixed for the current year. The New Zealand Crippled Children Society requested the support of the council and a donation of 10s was made. The Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club requested the support of the council and the clerk was directed to reply that in the opinion of the council aero clubs were so 1 closely concerned in the defence of the country generally that their finances should be a proper matter for Government subsidy. The chairman was authorised to arrange, if possible, to take three more men under scheme No. 13, as requested by the Labour Department. Mr R. H. Wilkin was granted tenancy of reserve No. 105. The matter of the rent to be payable was left in the hands of the chairman to arrange. It was decided to toward th<® following remits for the consideration of the New Zealand Counties’ Association at its annual meeting. That a subsidy of £ for £ on general county rates be provided by the Government; that engineers’ fees for the construction of roads and bridges be subsidised by the Government on the same basis as the actual contract price instead of upon the present percentage basis. The overseer reported progress on all work during the past month and prospective work was discussed and arranged for. ANNUAL MEETING. At the postponed annual meeting Councillor Cheetham was unanimously re-elected chairman. Councillor Cheetham expressed thanks for his re-election and his confidence in the co-operation of councillors. It was decided that the whole council be a finance committee.
