BRITISH MUSIC SOCIETY

FIRST CONCERT OF SEASON. A DELIGHTFUL PROGRAMME. The British Music Society held its first concert of the 1938 season on Saturday night at the residence of Mr and Mrs T. Jordan, Lansdowne. A delightful programme was enjoyed to the full by an appreciative audience. The president, Mr H. B. Massey, in welcoming Mrs J. E. Ramsay and Mr L. Harris, of Wellington, thanked them for coming to Masterton at such short notice. Their action was appreciated very much by members. Mr Massey also stated that Miss Olive Fish (Napier), was present. She was one of the original leaders of the Masterton British Music Society. The items, which were arranged by Mrs Ramsay soloist (accompanied by Miss L. Ramsay) were well chosen and beautifully rendered. Mr L. Harris played a varied selection of pianoforte items of old masters and provided a feast of all music lovers. The programme was as follows: — Mrs J. E. Ramsay, “Mein Aufemthalt’ (Schubert); "Mein Fieund” (Wolf); “Sch hab in Penna” (Wolf); “Foxgloves." “A Piper,” “Three Mummers,” “Sweet Chance that led my Step Abroad,” “Money,” all by Michael Head; “Oh Men of the Field” (Hughes); “So White, so soft, so sweet, is She” (Delius); “The Donkey” (Hageman);- “We Sway Along” (Mallinson). Mr Lionel Marris, L.R.A.M., A.R.:C.M. “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” (Bach-Hess); "Novelette in E" (Schumann); “Rhapsody in B Minor” (Brahms); “Jardins Sous la Pluis” (Debussy); “With the Setting Sun” (Albarcesi); “Ragmuffin” (John Greland); and the following Chopin items, Prelude in F No. 23, Etude in C Op. 10 No. 7, Etude in C Minor Op. 10 No. 12, Nocturne in D Op. 27 No. 2, Fantasie in F Minor.
