OBITUARY

MRS CATHERINE JAQUES The death occurred somewhat suddenly yesterday of Mrs Catherine Jaques, and last surviving member of the original settlers of Te Ore Ore. The late Mrs Jacques, who was 74 years of age, had resided in The Avenue, Te Ore Ore, ever since she came to the Wairarapa 53 years ago.. Born in Roscommon, Ireland, Mrs Jaques came to New Zealand when she was fourteen years of age, arriving in Wellington in the ship Hudson on March 19, 1879, after a voyage of four months from Plymouth. She resided in Wellington for a period, coming to the Wairarapa after her , marriage. Mrs Jaques was largely instrumental in establishing the first school at Te Ore Ore. She was held in high estee»" by her many friends. Her husband _«ne late Mr Roland Jaques predeceased her 11 years ago, and she is survived by a family of two sons, Messrs E. (Pahiatua), and F. R. Jaques (Havelock North), and three daughters, Mesdames O. Dudson (Dannevirke), and M. A. Carrie (Masterton), and Miss Jaques (Te Ore Ore), besides 21 grand children. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving St Patrick’s Church at 2 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. DR. H. T. DAWSON (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PAHIATUA, This Day. The death occurred in Pahiatua yesterday of Dr Henry Thomas Dawson, until recently Medical Superintendent of the Pahiatua Public Hospital at the age of seventy years. Dr Dawson had been practising in Pahiatua" for forty years. He was held in the highest regard by all section of the community for whom he laboured with devoted unselfishness. Recognised by the medical profession as a fine surgeon, he sacrificed a brilliant career by remaining in a country practice. Born in Scotland, Dr Dawson took his degrees at Edinburgh at the age of 20, and after a brief experience of practice in Great Britain, he came to New Zealand, being first engaged in practice at Tinui. He eventually came to Pahiatua forty years ago, and had been Medical Superintendent of the Pahiatua Hospital since that institution was opened 36 years ago.
