PONGAROA
FARMERS’ UNION MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Pongaroa branch of the Farmers’ Union, the secretary reported that the recent ball had resulted in a small loss. In the course of his remarks Mr Johnston stated that dances at Pongaroa would soon regain their popularity if they were conducted in the same manner as the farmers’ Un'on function had been. A letter was received from the Provincial secretary in which he stated that as he had to compile a brief report on farm labour matters he would like all branch secretaries to let him have their comments as soon as possible on just what they thought of the farm labour question in their respective districts. Members stated that the shortage of farm labour was not now as’acute as was the case some time ago. There was a deflnte shortage just at present owing to local bodies requiring labour for flood repairing work. Other members pointed out that there was a shortage of fencers, cowboys and cooks. FOOTBALL MATCH. The Coast team defeated Pongaroa in a football match on Saturday by 9 points to 6. HOCKEY GAMES. The following were the results of the hockey matches played on Saturday: Tiraumea beat Coast by 1 goal to nil, and Pongaroa defeated Waihora by a similar margin. CHILDREN VISIT SHOW. Accompanied by their teachers a number of school children visited the Manawatu Show this week. SCHOOL CONSOLIDATION. It isvtated that satisfactory progress is being made towards the school consolidation proposal.
