THE ALL BLACKS
TO TOUR NEW SOUTH WALES. MR E. McKENZIE’S SELECTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The 1938 All Blacks for the Australian tour in July and August were announced by the executive of the New Zealand Rugby Football Union last night. The team was chosen by the sole selector, Mr E. McKenzie, Wairarapa, after the North v South Island match on Saturday, but its announcement was withheld pending advice from the New South Wales Rugby Union that international rules would be played on the tour. The team is as follows: — FULL-BACK.
REP. GAME AT DUNEDIN. BAY OF PLENTY DEFEAT OTAGO. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, June 15. The Bay 'of Plenty forwards played a major part in the victory by the visiting team over Otago at Carisbrook this afternoon. The ground was heavy after recent rains, but the play of the northern team, composed mostly of Maoris and accustomed to hard grounds, did not suffer through the handicap. Bay of Plenty won by 9 points to 6. The heavy, bustling Bay of Plenty forwards may lack something in finish and kick too hard at the ball on the ground but they more than made up for this weakness by their solid packing and pushing in the tight play and by their covering up when their backs were in trouble. The visiting forwards were never dominated in close work, and although the Otago forwards for a period in the second half began to force their way through in loose rushes, the Bay of Plenty forwards were fully holding their own in the dying stages of the game. None “of the five Otago players who took part in the inter-island game was included in the Otago team. The first spell ended with the score 6 points to 3 in favour of Otago, Trevathan kicking a penalty and scoring a try, and Kaipara scoring a try for Bay of Plenty. In the second spell E. Howell, for Bay of Plenty, kicked a penalty goal, and Best scored a try. LEAGUE CODE KIWIS BEAT COUNTRY TEAM. UNINSPIRING PLAY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. SYDNEY, June 15. Failing in tactics and handling, the New Zealand Rugby League tourists managed to win by 23-2 against the poor country opposition of the far North Coast team, at Lismore, today. Two thousand watched the match. The wet, soggy ground precluded bright back play and, with the drizzle in the first half, the ball was like greased glass, but there was no wind. The New Zealand team was: J. Smith, Brown, Midgley, Tittleton, McNeil, W. Brimble, Grotte, Anderson, Gault, Glynn, Satherley, Cootes and Herring. Although the New Zealand second line play did not inspire hopes for the future, lack of enterprise, failure to penetrate and lack of devil among the forwards, whose off-side tactics resulted in many penalties, marred the game. Only sound tackling by Smith prevented the home side from scoring tries. t The scorers for New Zealand were: Tries, Brimble, Anderson, Tittleton, Brown, Grotte. Smith converted four. For the North Coast, O’Connor kicked a penalty goal.
