SETTLERS FAREWELLED. (“Times-Age” Special.) On Monday night at Newman settlers from the surrounding districts gathered to farewell Mr and Mrs T. Moss and Miss Moss and Mr John Cooper and Mr and Mrs L. Cooper, all of whom are leaving the district. During the evening Mr J. Monaghan (chairman of the Newman Dairy Company) asked Mr and Mrs Moss to accept a silver teaset, Miss Moss a crystal vase, Mr John Cooper a chiming clock and Mr and Mrs L. Cooper an electric reading lamp. He wished them every happiness in their new homes. A number of speakers referred in eulogistic terms to the work which the departing settlers • had carried out in connection with the progress of the district.
Mr G. -R. Sykes - said-it -was with deep regret they were saying au revoir to such old friends of sterling worth. Their departure would leave a gap that would be very hard to fill. He had been identified with Mr Moss in many matters and could say he had played a most important part in civic and national life. In addition to creating highly improved farms both gentlemen had reared families of which they were very, proud, and of which the whole district was proud. They would carry away with them the respect and esteem of all. Messrs Moss, John Cooper and L. Cooper suitably-,replied. DEATH OF MR P. FAUVEL. Pryde was re-elected chairman. Mr F. B. Rossiter was appointed to fill the vacancy on the management committee caused by the retirement of Mr R. Thomasen. BOROUGH COUNCIL AFFAIRS. At the monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council a request from the Wairarapa-Ruahine Aero Club for a grant was refused. The usual half yearly grant was made to the fire brigade. It was decided on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Councillor Simmers, that the County Council be asked for a £ for £ contribution towards the upkeep of the cemetery. The Mayor and Councillor Simmers were appointed to wait on the County Council and discuss the matter. The Mayor referred to the War Memorial. A plan, he said, was being prepared for the addition of a porch. The council had painted' the building from time to time, but repairs were now needed. He was wondering who had to “carry the baby.” The Borough Council was only trustee for a district convenience and he considered the county should share the cost. He thought that the deputation which was to vzait on the Eketahuna County Council in regard to the cemetery could open up the subject with the county.
