NATIVE LANDS

f MANY DEVELOPMENT SCHEMES MINISTER ON PROGRESS MADE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, June 13. A review of the Maori land development activities was given by the Acting-Native Minister, the Hon F. Langstone, at a Native gathering which assembled at Waimatatini yesterday for the ceremony of reopening the Porourangi meeting-house. Mr Langstone stated that the number of schemes had been increased by the present Government from 75 to 126, comprising in all over 800,000 acres, of which 218.0Q0 were actually under development at present. When these schemes were carried to a conclusion, the area actually developed would exceed 500,000 acres. A total of 1722 units had been settled under the schemes and 3158 others employed, workers and dependants totalling nearly 16,000. Here they had the essentials of a wonderful achievement, added the Minister. Land which had been unproductive had been brought into production, and men who had been without occupation had been given employment. There was really a prodigious production of the necessaries of life where previously there had been idle lands and idle people.
