NATIONAL PARTY

SOCIAL AT NIREAHA. There was a very large gathering in the Nireaha Hall on Friday evening to meet Mr J. H. Irving, the National candidate for the Masterton seat, and Mrs Irving. The early part of the evening was spent in a euchre tournament, some 48 players taking part, the winners being: Ladies, Mrs W. J. O’Neil and Miss Hancock; men, Messrs S. R. Blewett and W. P. Tateson. The games were controlled by Messrs R. Thomasen and J. P. Petersen. On the completion of the tournament Mr R. Thomasen (branch chairman) welcomed and introduced Mr and Mrs Irving, saying how fortunate the electorate was in having a man of Mr Irving’s ability offering as a candidate, also referring to the sacrifice he was making in entering the political field.

Mr Irving in reply thanked the assemblage for its warm welcome and on behalf of Mrs Irving and himself expressed pleasure at being present. He considered it was up to everyone to take a lively interest in local and national politics, and that sacrifices had to be made so that the government of the country would be put on a sound basis. At a future date he would again visit Nireaha to address the electors, when he hoped a large crowd would be present. Supper was handed round after which dancing was indulged in, music being supplied by Mrs Benge and Messrs N. Cooper, A. Hansen, J. B. Drysdale and W. W. Drysdale. Messrs T. R. Hancock and R. Lawrence acted as M’s.C.
