WOMEN’S DIVISION.
(“Times-Age” Special)
The monthly meeting of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union was held on Thursday afternoon, .when Mrs Wakely presided over a good attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Carter, Clarke, Charles, Q. Donald, Pendergrast, Robbins and Miss Goodrick. An invitation to be present at the birthday celebrations of the Greytown branch on Wednesday next was accepted. The report of the provincial executive was read and discussed.
There was a good collection of bulbs, seedlings and cuttings brought by members for exchange. The competitions decided upon for next meeting were the best article made from a sugar bag, and the best bloom and best shoulder spray. The hostesses were Mesdames Wakely, J. Blain and G. Burt. HAUNUI CROQUET CLUB. The Haunui Croquet Club held a euchre afternoon in the pavilion on Thursday. The results were: Mrs C. Red 1, Mrs Watson 2. Consolation, Mrs White 1. PERSONALS. Mr J. W. Card is spending a few days in Wanganui. Mrs Ashman, Christchurch, is the from her visit to Palmerston, where she was the guest of Mrs Russell. Miss Esma Card spent the weekend with her sister, Mrs'R. McKenzie, Ballance.
Mrs Ashman, Chriostchurch, is the guest of Mrs N. C. C. Shepherd for a few days. Mr and Mrs T. W. Shwaites were the guests of Mr and Mrs Juno, Pahautea, for the weekend. ■ Mrs M. Lenihan returned today from a holiday spent in Westport. Mrs Phylis Mellish, Lower Hutt, is spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs G. Sadler, Pahautea. Mr and Mrs Nickolason, Pahautea, have left for a motor tour of the North Island.
The many friends of Mr Martin Lenahan, Pahautea, will regret to hear that he was taken seriously ill on Sunday morning. After receiving medical attention he was taken to the Greytown Hospital. Miss Tyler, who has been ill for some time, is reported to be making satisfactory progress. Through having a fall at her home yesterday morning Mrs J. Kelly, Kaiwaiwai, received slight concussion which necessitated medical attention. FEATHERSTON GOLF CLUB. A Stableford competition held at the “Gum Grove” links on Saturday resulted as follows: —I. Donald, 18-16-34; J. McCallum, 22-11-33; W. Crawford, 29-3-32. A HOLE IN ONE. Mr lan Donald, playing the 17th, “The Wrecker,” holed out in one on Saturday. This is the first occasion that “The Wrecker” has been holed in one. * The distance is 135 yards and the bogey is 3. Members helped Mr Donald to celebrate the occasion. RIVER BOARD. At the monthly meeting of the South Wairarapa River Board Mr R. McDougall was re-elected chairman for the ensuing term. Rates amounting to £76 9s 4d were struck off, and it was decided to instruct the board’s solicitor to sue for unpaid rates. Considerable discussion took place over the cost of the present system of opening the lake, and it was thought mechanical help would be effective and cheaper. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman. Rates for the current year were struck at the same as last year: 9d per acre A class land, 6d per acre B class land, and 3d per acre C class land. The rates are expected to bring in the sum of £7OO.
