BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING

MR H. P. HUGO ELECTED CHAIRMAN

The monthly meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust was held last night. There were present, Messrs J. Macfarlane Laing, H. P. Hugo, E. G. Eton, A. Owen Jones, C. E. Grey, H. H. Daniell, J. H. Handyside and R. Krahagen. An apology for absence was received for Mr W. H. Jackson.

On the motion of Messrs Laing and Jones, Mr Hugo was elected chairnjan for the ensuing twelve months. Mr Daniell, commenting on a statement made by Mr Laing that the chairmanship should go round, said he thought that a very weak reason. He did not agree that the position should go round year by year, as it took a member some time.to acquaint himself with the duties associated with the chairmanship. Other members disagreed with Mr Daniell’s contention, stating that in their opinion the position should go round. Mr Jones said a man of average ability was able, in a few minutes, to get into the workings of the board. Mr Hugo expressed thanks for his election, and went on to congratulate Mr Laing on heading the recent poll, and to welcome the two new members, Messrs Handyside and Daniell. On the motion of the chairman it was decided to place on record appreciation of the services rendered by Mr L. J. Taylor, who had been a member of the board for six years, and had always been sound in his judgment. It was agreed to send a letter to Mr Taylor expressing these sentiments. The Amateur Theatrical Society wrote accepting the offer of a room at the Technical School building for rehearsal purposes. The treasurer reported as follow as at June 1: No 1 account, credit £7Ol Is; No 2 account, credit, £273 9s 6d; No 3 account, credit, £67 16s Id. Accounts totalling £290 8s 2d were passed.

The following, committees were appointed: — Building: Messrs Eton, Laing and Hugo.

Finance: Messrs Krahagen. Handyside and Daniell. Education: Messrs Jones. Jackson and Grey.
