Lonely Vigil Ends. A solitary and ceaseless vjgil of six months ended the other day when the lookout man stationed on the summit of Rainbow Mountain, 17 miles from Rotorua, to report the existence of any fires in the State forests in the district, was relieved of his duties for the winter months. Since the beginning of November he was required to be constantly on the alert to detect signs of fire which might threaten the thousands of acres of trees planted within the last forty years. From the windows of his cabin he could survey on fine days an area of several hundred square miles.
