ROAD CYCLING
WAIRARAPA CLUB’S RACE. (By “Sprocket.”) The Wairarapa Amateur Cycling Club conducted a 28-mile race on Saturday. There were 11 starters and good times were recorded. J. Brader put up a splendid performance in winning and securing the fastest time. Both he and R. Copp off Imin gave the limit men 9 mins and by good judgment and lapping deserved their places. J. Duckett filled second place, just beating R. Copp, but he wants to ride straight without looking back. Spills can be caused through carelessness. R. Copp (Imin) was third and again rode a fine race, but just lacked the finishing speed burst of his co-marker. M. Graham (smin) rode well again but should remember to lap better. E. Lefort must be complimented on his good performance. G. Swain and B. Dooling were with the leaders when they crashed and it would have been a great finish had these two riders been in the bunch. All the riders wish the latter a speedy recovery.
K. Woollett is getting over his recent accident and should be a competitor before long. Of the three scratch men G. Little showed the best form. B. Harman had chain trouble early and G. Little dropped his co-marker C. Dykes about half-way round the block. The 1-min-ute men were about imin ahead of G. Little at this stage. After leaving Gladstone on the run home the 1-minute men, J. Brader and R. Copp, worked well together and got the time honours by about Imin from Little, who found the solo effort too much. C. Dykes was going well for the first 12 miles before being dropped by his co-marker. However, with more training and by regulating his speed a bit he should be in a place before long. B. Gay (lOmin) rode his first race and put up a splendid performance to finish 6th, about Imin behind the winners and 100 yards ahead of the scratch man Little. More, should be heard of this lad before very long. After the race the riders were supplied with afternoon tea at the residence of Mrs Dooling, and this was a fitting finish to a fine race. Mrs Dooling’s hospitality is very much appreciated.
Next Saturday’s race will be over a 14-mile course and should prove interesting.
