NEW GEYSER
IN ORAKEI KORAKO AREA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ROTORUA, May 26. A new geyser in the Orakei Korako thermal area has developed a large vent at the foot of the great white silica terrace which dominates one of the most active of the thermal regions in this area. This terrace, which resembles nothing so much as a frozen waterfall, is one of the most spectacular features of Orakei Korako. At its foot lies an expansive area of white silica, broken only by a number of bubbling thermal pools where the hot waters from beneath have broken their way through the thin overlying crust. The new geyser appears to be impregnated with some chemical which is giving to the silica over which its overflow passes a distinct pinkish tinge. It plays regularly at 20-minute intervals, and continues in action for approximately 20 minutes. During this period it throws off tremendous quantities of steam and water accompanied by a loud rumbling and churning noise. It continuously throws up jets of water and spray to a height of 20 ft above the mouth of the vent.
