ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

MASTERTON CADET DIVISION. The weekly meeting of the St. John Ambulance Cadet Division was held in the Boxing Hall, Dixon Street on Monday, 32 members being present under the control of Mr C. S. McQuade, Cadet Superintendent, assisted by Mr A. Dean, Cadet Officer. Mr E. B. Gilberd, District Officer,' and Mr C. A. WilsonGrant, Corps Cadet Officer of Wellington, paid the division a visit. A very interesting lecture on artificial respiration was given by Mr Grant, and was much appreciated. Mr Gilberd stated that he had a very pleasant duty to perform which partly accounted for his visit to Masterton. He then officially presented Mr McQuade with his warrant of commission as an officer of the brigade in charge of the Masterton Cadet Division, and Mr Dean <, ith his warrant of commission as a Cadet Officer. Mr Gilberd spoke very highly of the capabilities of these two officers and the manner in which they were carrying out their duties. He also commented on the efficiency shown by Sergeant G. T. Swain and Corporal E. Grigg, during the camp held at Maori Bank, Upper Hutt, last Easter. Sergeant G. T. Swain was presented with his proficiency badge, ’the first of its kind to be awarded in Masterton. This badge was obtained by gaining four proficiency certificates, namely, camping and rambling, physical exercises, cooking and clerical ability. Mr McQuade stated that Sergeant Swain had earned his clerical ability certificate as a result of the able manner in which he had carried out his secretarial duties as Divisional Secretary, since the Division had been formed last year. First proficiency badges have since been gained by L. W. Thompson, J. Morris, and Corporal E. Grigg, and will shortly arrive from England. Mr McQuade proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the visitors for their attendance, which was carried by acclamation. The visitors and local officers were then entertained at supper- by Mi- and Mrs G. Dean, of Tararua Street.
