MARTINBOROUGH
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING (“Times-Age” Special) The first meeting of the new Borough Council was held last evening. There were also present Councillors The Mayor, Mr C. W. Skill presided. G. P. Cotter, M. W. Hardie P. R. Plummer, W. H. Corfield, T. A. Hamilton, M. Mulvaney, C. R. Holmes, D. G Green, and W. F. Gundrie. The Mayor welcomed the new councillors, and expressed the hope that the ensuing term of office would be a pleasant and successful one. The swearing-in ceremony then took place. The Mayor and councillors making the usual declarations. It was unanimously resolved that, as Cr Hardie had topped the poll, he be elected Deputy-Mayor. He was also appointed Treasurer.
The election of the sub-committees resulted as follows: —Works Committee, Crs Skill (chairman), Hardie, Holmes, and Green; Hall Committee: Crs Plummer (chairman), Cotter and Green; Library) Committee: Crs Gundrie and Hamilton; Lighting Committee: Crs Cotter (chairman), Mulvaney and Corfield; Parks Committee: Mayor and Deputy Mayor; Rates Committee: Mayor, Treasurer and Cr Holmes. The Works Committee is to act as the Sub-Divi-sion Committee. Before the meeting went into committee, Cr Gundrie, on behalf of the Councillors, congratulated Mr Skill on his election as Mayor. He was sure that Mr Skill with his charitable outlook and sympathetic understanding would do his utmost for the welfare of the town. The good wishes and sympathy of the council were extended to the Mayor in his recent accident. Cr Gundrie expressed the loyalty and support of the Council to the Mayor. In replying the Mayor, thanked Mr Gundrie and the Council for his kind remarks. To emulate, even in a small way, the work done by the past Mayor, is going to be very hard, said Mr Skill. Special reference was made also to the long service to the Council of Messrs Robt. Smith, Mahood and Boyd. RADIO CLUB EUCHRE TOURNEY. The winners of the Radio Club Euchre last evening were: Ladies, Mrs Grimstone 1, Mrs Whitehead 2; Men, Mr W. McNally 1, Mr F Holland 2.
