COUNTY AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL. RATE FOR CURRENT YEAR. The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held on Saturday. Mr E. W. Cheetham (chairman) presided and there were also present Councillors R. Judd, D. Bennett, A. Forsberg, A. Gray and C. Welch.

The chairman extended a welcome to Councillor Welch, who took his seat for the first time and expressed his confidence that Councillor Welch would co-operate with the council in the interests of the ratepayers as a whole.

Councillor Welch acknowledged the chairman’s greetings.

The treasurer reported a debit balance of £1420. Accounts passed totalled £450 16s 4d. , The chairman reported that application had been made for main highways grants for the coming year as required by the Main Highways Board to be lodged by May 16 and also that applications had been made for the declaration of the South Road and the southern end of the main road as additional highways or as an alternative that the northern end of Main Highway No. 443 be exchanged for the southern end of the same highway as an extension of No. 443 southwards.

The chairman’s action was confirmed. The matter of making application to the Public Works Department for grants for county roads was considered and it was decided to apply for the renewal of the Hall Bridge grant only. The matter of limiting the weights of heavy traffic on certain roads for the winter season, as usual, was considered and it was decided to limit the weights on the following roads: Jackson’s Road, West Road, Mount Munro Road, Mangamahoe Road and Kaiparoro Road.

Messrs C. E. Daniell, Ltd., requested to know oh what conditions the council would grant them permission for heavy log passage over certain of the county’s roads. The clerk was directed to reply stating the conditions that would be required. The chairman was nominated as the representative of the council upon No. 10 District Highways Council. Notice of a claim made on behalf of Mr Alex McKenzie in respect to pn accident to him was submitted and the chairman reported that the matter had been referred to the county solicitor. The action of the chairman was approved. The State Forest Service advised allocation of fifths, which it was decided to apply to the maintenance of general county roads. The building inspector submitted a lengthy report regarding a building which had been erected without a permit being obtained therefor. The report was considered satisfactory.

The estimates for the general rate for the current year were considered and after careful consideration and in view of the fact that the council had found it necessary to purchase two new lorries and a truck for the more economical maintenance of the roads and bridges and in view also of the increasing cost which had taken place it was found that it was impossible to reduce the rates for the current year, although it was considered that the financial position of the council was considerably better than last year. It was decided to propose striking a rate at the next meeting of 1 3-8 d in the £ over the whole county. It was pointed out that the general rate of the county included a hospital rate which was very considerable and was increasing.

Mx’ P. G. Burt applied for the lease of a reserve at Hastwell on certain conditions. The clerk was instructed to reply.
