FLOOD RELIEF

WAIRARAPA DISTRICT EFFORT APPEAL BY MR T. JORDAN. “LET US MAKE A GENEROUS FINISH.” “The efforts of the Wairarapa district to contribute towards the relief of the sufferers by the recent Hawke’s Bay floods centre round the ball to be held in the Municipal Hall at Masterton on Tuesday next, May 24,” said Mr T. Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, today. “The cause is one that is near to us all and somewhere it is written that ‘a fellow feeling makes us wondrous kind.’ Let the kindness appear in this, so that our contribution to Hawke’s Bay may be worthy of us and show that we are not of that feather to shake off our friends when they most need us. The time is now short; let us make a generous finish. The moneys collected in this district will be sent to the Mayor of Napier to augment his Relief Fund.” RELIEF FUND. ADDITIONAL DONATIONS. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, acknowledges receipt of the following additional donations to the Hawke’s Bay Flood Relief Fund:—

Anonymous (Eketahuna) .... Cakes Martin Smith .... Free bus from Carterton on night of ball. The proceeds of the Wairarapa appeal- are to be paid into the Mayor’s relief fund at Napier for distribution. Considerable enthusiasm is being shown throughout the Wairarapa and there is'every prospect of a large sum of money being raised. This evening between 7 and 8 o’clock, 2YZ Wellington, will broadcast a message from the Mayor soliciting support for the appeal. PAHIATUA ASSISTING FUND Representatives of various women’s institutions met in Pahiatua on Tuesday, at the invitation of the Mayoress (Mrs J. D, Wilson) to discuss plans for raising money to assist the sufferers in the recent Hawke’s Bay flood disaster. Mrs Wilson presided. Mr W. Hall Watson, who had been asked to sponsor the movement by the Masterton organisers, explained that a charity ball was being organised in Masterton, as a Wairarapa effort. The ball, music, advertising and supper were all being given, so that all returns would go directly to Hawke’s Bay. Tickets were being sold at 5s each and already large numbers had been sold and immediately destroyed, the buyers having no interest in the ball but wishing to help the funds.' One donation of £25 had been received in this way. Mrs R. C. Austin mentioned that people in Poverty Bay had suffered just as much as those in Hawke’s Bay and eventually, on the motion of Mrs Austin and Mr W. Hall Watson, it was decided to assist in the cause by disposing of tickets, it being also agreed to stress the necessity of embracing the Poverty Bay sufferers within the scope of the distribution of the money raised. The president of the Women’s Division (Mrs W. F. Day) explained that the Pahiatua branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union had just canvassed the district for donations to the recent Farmers’ Union ball and therefore felt that they could not make further appeals. They were repared to donate £5 from the funds if the meeting was prepared to accept.

In answer to Mrs Wilson, Mrs Day intimated that the Division did not want tickets to the value of £5, but would give it as a straight-out donation.

The donation was very gratefully received and several ladies volunteered to take tickets for sale. Altogether £3O worth of tickets were taken for sale and Mr L. D. Lovelock kindly undertook to act as treasurer for the helpers.
