The Hon F. Jones, Minister of Defence, returned to Wellington from the north today. The Hon R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, is expected to return to Wellington from the north on Monday. The Hon. F. Langstone, Minister of Lands, returned to Wellington today from a visit to the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty districts. Mr J. R. Sutcliffe, B.Sc., headmaster of Scots College, Wellington, has been appointed headmaster of the Church of England Grammar School, Melbourne. He will take up his duties in August. Owing to the resignation of Mr W. Duffill, club captain of the Eketahuna Golf Club, Mr D. Fraser, previously vice-captain, has taken over the duties. Mr A. L. Wilson has been appointed to the vacancy on the committee. Group Captain R. A. Cochrane, of the Air Department, Wellington, will arrive in Masterton this afternoon, about 4.30 o’clock. He will meet the members of the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club tonight at the Club House. Sir Thomas Wilford returned to Wellington by the Mataroa from London yesterday. Lady Wilford will arrive in about three weeks. With the exception of a visit to Aintree to see the Grand National, Sir Thomas spent most of the six weeks he was in England renewing friendships he made in London during his residence there from 1930 to 1936. The death occurred at Wellington this week of Mr William Smith, latterly a resident of Auckland, a well known school teacher and also a prominent bowler. Born at Munro’s Gully, Lawrence, Otago, 69 years ago, Mr Smith was educated at the Lawrence District High School and at the University of Otago, where he graduated in arts. Joining the teaching profession, he took charge of his first school at Ardlussa, Southland, in 1893. Occupying successive appointments at Gore and Pukerau, Mr Smith came to the North Island, and after serving at Pakipaki and Gisborne, assumed charge of the Waipawa District High School, and thereafter was headmaster of the Miramar South School, Waihi District High School and Te Kuiti District High School. From the last position he retired in 1930. Mr Smith was an active member of the Masonic Order. '
