BIRTH RATE SHRINKAGE
A GRAVE VIEW TAKEN BY FARMERS UNION CONFERENCE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 19. A grave view of the shrinkage of the birth rate was taken by delegates of the Auckland, provincial farmers’ conference which unanimously adopted a remit urging that wages and salaries be based on the requirements of man and wife only and an adequate amount be paid by the State for the maintenance of each child; r ' It was stated that in 1870 the average size of families was 5.5 In 1936 it was 1.8 It was also stated that actuualiy an average family of over three was required for the continuance of the race.
“The State pays 15s a week for a child boarded out,” said Mr A. C. A. Sexton, M.P. “Surely a similar amount should be paid to parents for the upkeep of their own children.”
