ROAD CYCLING

WAIRARAPA CLUB NOTES (By “Sprocket”) Saturday’s race was run under ideal weather conditions and the riding was of a high standard, some good times being recorded. Russ Copp rode a fine race to gain first place and fastest time. He is striking form and ’should do well in later events. Good luck Russ! J. Duckett put up a fine performance to gain second place, and in doing so astounded ■ some of the critics. I think he has been doing some sound training however. Keep it up Jack! M. Graham gave another, good performance, and is very consistent. He should be heading the field in very soon. B. Harman secured second fastest time, and put up a creditable performance. He did well in the Wellington Cycling Centre’s race on May 7, securing second fastest time against strong opposition. J. McAliece was B. Harman’s. comarker, and he went very well. These two riders ride excellently together, and more should be heard of them. J. Brader had machine trouble on the outward journey and retired from the race. He is one of the mo|t consistent riders in the club, having been in a place in each event. A Morris, the rider from Carterton, could not get started, being dropped at the start by his co-markers. But being a game rider he completed the journey. To him goes the spoon this week, and here's wishing him the best of luck in future events. E. Lefort, S. Brannigan, G. Swain and L. Green are showing considerable promise, and should be among the winners before very long. K. Wollett was on the virtual scratch mark, but found it too much, and could not make an impression on the field. This rider is developing into one of the best riders in the Wairarapa. C. I. Dykes failed to make an impression on the field, but should do well in the longe’r races. G. Little is gradually striking form and like his co-marker. Dykes, should be heard of in the longer events. B. Dooling was a spectator on Saturday, owing to a severe cold. When he shakes it off he will be out again and should be in a place before long as he is improving with every ride. L Clarke was absent on Saturday, but it is not surprising as he has to come up from Featherston to compete. It is to be hoped that he will be out again soon.
