LOCAL BODY SERVICE
FORMER & PRESENT WAIRARAPA RESIDENTS. At the recent local body elections held at Waipukurau, two ex-Master-ton residents were successful. Mr R. W. Carpenter, formerly a Masterton journalist, who .had served seven years on the Waipukurau Borough Council, was elected Mayor unopposed, and Mr A. C. Holmes, J.P., was again returned at the head of the Power Board poll. Mr Holmes was from 1930 to 1936 the sole Waipukurau representative on the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board and from 1936 till 1938 has been one of two members, and also continuously a member of the finance committee. Mr J. McCarthy, who topped the borough poll, is Mr Holms’s new associate on the Power Board, having succeeded Mr W. A. Chambers, J.P., who is at present on a visit to England. In 1919 and 1922 Mr Holms, as an Independent Liberal, contested the Masterton seat at the general election. He took a very keen interest in local body administration in the Wairarapa, particularly in friendly society, educational, automobile and Rugby football circles. He was one of two commissioners concerned in the declaration of Featherston as a borough. Later he was president of the Levin and Waipukurau Chambers of Commerce. Another ex-resident of the Waipukurau, Mr E. J. E. Tyler, formerly of Martinborough and Featherston, was re-elected a member of the Dannevirke Borough Council. Possibly a record has been created by the return of Mr J. W. Card unopposed as Mayor of Featherston. This term of three years will make nearly 42 years of continuous service given to the borough, and former town district, by Mr Card. Mr Card has always been returned unopposed since he was first nominated as Mayor by Commissioners A. C. Holms (then treasurer to the town board) and M. B. Tait, both of whom are still active in public affairs.
