MEETING IN MASTERTON. Mrs Speight presided over a good attendance of members at the recent meeting in the Methodist Hall. Mrs Jansen led in the devotional period. Arrangements were made for the opening meeting of the Loyal Temperance Legion, when Mr Sims, the new superintendent, would be present. A report on the annual W.C.T.U. Convention held in Napier was read by Miss Tankersley. The members of Convention were given a civic welcome in the Foresters’ Hall.. Cr. Oldham (who spoke on behalf of the Mayor) said that Napier felt honoured to entertain the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, -whose motto for “God, Home and Humanity” was the code which they stood by. The letters W.C.T.U. could also in their case be interpreted as “We Come to Uplift.” The president of the W.C.T.U., Mrs Hull, presided at the Convention, the interests of which will cover social, welfare and temperance works. x They had Maori branches in Waikato and North Auckland and Band of Hope, L.T.G. and Y. branches were under their supervision. Their paper, the White Ribbon, had an increase of 411 subscribers last year. The Turakina Maori Girls’ School won the Y. Banner for the largest Y. branch in New Zealand. At the conclusion of her report Miss Tankersley was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The Loyal Temperance Legion held its opening meeting on Tuesday, May 'lO, in the Methodist Hall, when Mr Sims was welcomed to the Legion. The children had a happy social evening at the conclusion of a short temperance talk. The Y.P.C.T.U. also held its meeting on Tuesday, Mr Sims being present. Arrangements for the year’s work were discussed. The meeting concluded by the pronouncing of the benediction.
