HOUSEHOLD HINTS

Fruit-stains can be removed by pouring boiling water over them. If the stains are very old, however, use oxalic acid diluted. Wet the stain and rinse well in water, then apply ammonia and rinse in clear water. This method will also work as well if applied to ink and leather stains or iron mould.

If a stew is inclined to be greasy, try pouring a teacupful of cold water into it a short time before you serve it. This makes the fat rise to the top, and it can then be skimmed off easily.

To prevent moths from attacking your woollies, rub the sides of the drawers in which the articles are stored with the following: Equal parts of oil of cedar, oil- of cajeput, and oil of cloves.

For a persistent attack of hiccough, hold the chin in a cupful of cold water. The cure is almost instantaneous.

To clean the rubber rollers of a wringer or mangle, rub with a flannel moistened with kerosene.

To remove the unpleasant odour of stale tobacco from a room, put a red cinder on | a shovel and drop a few drops of lavender oil on it. If a cinder is not available, put a lump of rock ammonia or a few drops of liquid ammonia into a jar, add three or four drops of lavender oil and a little boiling water. Leave the jar uncovered in the room, and close the door for a few minutes. The room will smell sweet again.
