ARRESTS IN RUSSIA
WRECKAGE AND EMBEZZLEMENT ALLEGED PLAN OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY FAILS. (Recd This Day, 1.45 p.m.) MOSCOW, May 8. M Kagonovitch has announced that the entire 1937 plan for the chemical industry failed owing to wreckage. The director, Nakoliakov, and the chief book-keeper Garkanov, and the fiction department of the State publishing house have been arrested on charges of embezzling £40,000, the sum of which was misappropriated and some advanced to authors for unwritten books. Army tax collectors are swooping on villages throughout Russia to collect arrears of peasants’ taxes.
