THIRD LABOUR GAIN
THE IPSWICH BY-ELECTION.
GOVERNMENT TAKING NOTICE. (Recd This Day, 9.40 a.m.) LONDON, May 6. The Lichfield by-election owing to the death of Mr J. A. Lovat-Fraser resulted: G. Poole (Labour) 23,586 votes and G. Craddock (National Liberal) 22,760. A Labour gain. ' The Australian Associated Press says Lichfield, following on Ipswich and West Fulham, constitutes the third successive Labour gain in by-elections from the Government, but the majorities are regarded as insufficient to indicate any decided swing from the Government ranks. Nevertheless the Government has decided to intensify its campaigning in by-elections, as instanced by the recent removal of the ban against members of the Cabinet speaking in them.
