OBITUARY

THE DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE.

LONDON, May 6. The death is announced of the Duke of Devonshire. Victor Christian William Cavendish, ninth Duke of Devonshire, came from a family of long standing in England, being heir to a dukedom created in 1694. He was heir to various other titles —Baron Cavendish, 1605; Earl of Devonshire, 1618; Marquess of Hartington, 1694; Earl of Burlington, 1831; Baron Cavendish (U.K.), 1831. He was born in May, 1868, eldest son of Lord Edward Cavendish. In 1892 he married Lady Evelyn Fitzmaurice, a daughter of the fifth Marquis of Lansdowne, having two sons and five daughters. After an education at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, • he filled many important positions. He was Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1922 to 1924, and Gov-ernor-General of Canada from 1916 to 1921. He was Chancellor of Leeds University and High Steward of Cambridge University.

MR LAWRENCE ENNIS. BUILDER OF SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE. LONDON, May 6.. Mr Lawrence Ennis, aged 67, collapsed and died in Dorman Long’s London office. Mr Ennis was engineer in charge of the construction of Sydney’s famous harbour bridge during the period 1924-32. He had been managing director of Dorman, Long and Co., Ltd., iron and steel manufacturers and constructors in Middlesbrough, for six years.
