SOUTH AGAIN

MR LINCOLN ELLSWORTH’S PROJECT MEANS TO MAP ENDERBY LAND EXPEDITION TAKING PLANE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright. NEW YORK, May 5. The explorer Lincoln Ellsworth, in an article in the “New York Times,” announces a fourth expedition to Antarctica, in which he hopes to map from the air Enderby quadrant, the world’s largest unknown territory. The expedition will be equipped with a Northrup Delta plane. The expedition ship, Wyatt Earp, will sail from New York on August 10, 1938. Mr Ellsworth will join the vessel at Cape Town on October 10. If conditions are favourable Mr Ellsworth may attempt a flight from the coast on Enderby Land across the Antarctic Continent to Little America, a distance of 2000 miles.

“I hope we will be able to bring back much geological and scientific information,” he said. “Mawson found definite evidence of silver, copper and other minerals along the coast, which may be indicative of rich wealth inland. This area is already claimed by Australia, consequently I will not be able to claim any new territory for the United States. On the return trip it may be necessary to head for Australia should we run short of fuel.”
